Our Motivation

Active Learn was founded with a clear purpose in mind: to address the lack of individualised support and guidance in English education.

We witnessed the struggles many students faced without the personalised attention they needed to improve their English skills and build confidence. Our motivation stems from a deep desire to provide the one-on-one instruction and resources that students deserve, empowering them to excel academically and reach their full potential.

Expertise and Insight

We bring invaluable expertise, insight and a deep understanding of student needs based on 27 years of teaching senior English and leading an English Faculty. Also, the principles of Active Learn originate from knowledge acquired from a Research-based Master of Education that focused on understanding the influencing factors on student achievement.

Are lessons online or in person?

We offer weekly 1-1 tutoring sessions that are conducted online, providing convenience and flexibility for students to learn from the comfort of their own homes.

What year levels does Active Learn teach?

Currently we offer tutoring sessions for Years 9 - 12 students.

PARENTS: What if my son/daughter feels anxious about English?

If your daughter/son feels anxious about English, this is even more reason to engage a tutor who will equip the student with knowledge, skills and habits to reach their full potential; increased confidence means lowered anxiety. Anxiety has a cumulative effect! Addressing it by empowering the student and supporting them in developing confidence is crucial to stop anxiety in its tracks!

Anxiety is only a problem if you don’t do something about it! Anxiety can lead to a lack of confidence. It is only when students feel resilient that they can learn! Tutoring is based on empowering students and nurturing confidence and equipping students with the tools to thrive in their learning.

How early should I start tutoring?

It is ideal to get started as soon as the School year begins – this is a journey and you will be wanting to consistently and steadily build up skills and confidence.

What are the pros/cons of getting a tutor?

PROS:
A tutor is there to companion you in your development, empowering you to blaze your own trail in English. The working relationship between the tutor and the student is one based on trust and understanding. Your tutor will be there to support you to achieve what you want to achieve.

Tutors can help a student to see things with new eyes! They can help you to identify your strengths and build up your skills from there. Active Learn will assist you in being MINDFUL and INTENTIONAL about this!

Research shows that when a caring tutor/coach points out to you something you couldn’t see for yourself, your self-esteem increases.

CONS:
It is important to be an active participant in the learning process. The tutor is not there to complete your homework – the more you put in, the more you will progress in your learning.

Are there stages in the tutoring journey?

The first session is a relaxed “getting to know you” session. We will discuss “how” you have gone in English until now, and more importantly, “where to next?” We will discuss habits and start some skill development.

Each session will build on the one before – you will feel your understanding and skills improve as we move through each session – this requires patience and consistency and dedication to completing some work before each session.

PARENTS: How do I know if the Tutor is a match for my son/daughter?

Our tutors have been coached in the Active Learn way, to create a nurturing environment where students feel respected and safe. Our tutors aim to create fun and relaxed tutoring sessions – the best environment for students to reach their full potential.

Our tutors have achieved a score of 45 or above for VCE Year 12 English and will support the students they work with in developing knowledge, skills and habits that lead to success.

Our tutors genuinely care about helping others to reach their potential; we value reliability, consistency, and care. We will match a tutor to your child.

PARENTS: What if my son/daughter has Special Needs?

If your daughter/son has Special Needs, it is important that you communicate this to us and the learning styles that will support the student best – we will modify our own tutoring approach appropriately and adopt these approaches in the tutoring session.

How frequent are the tutoring sessions?

Sessions are held once a week and the commitment is for the term. The sessions run for 55 minutes.

Do the expectations of the student, the parent and the tutor need to be clearly communicated and aligned?

At Active Learn, we are committed to seeing you thrive in English. That means, both the student and the tutor will attend each weekly session and be prepared. The work completed by the tutor and students will be recorded on a google doc and stored in a folder with all the resources shared with the student.

10 sessions of tuition is paid up front at the beginning of each term. We expect that at least 24 hours’ notice is given if you are unable to attend a session. We will endeavour to make up the session for another time.
